Midwoof Diaries: What is a Pomsky?

Pomskies are a designer breed that is a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. Veteran breeders began their own lines by artificially inseminating a Siberian Husky female with the semen from a male Pomeranian. Anyone that uses a female Pomeranian instead is taking the life of that female into their hands. It is an extremely dangerous practice and should not be done that way.

Why did breeders choose the Pomeranian to cross with the Husky? The Pomeranian, though small, has a dual coat, just like a Husky. Both the Pomeranian and the Husky blow their coat twice a year, but with regular brushing and maintenance, the hair can be controlled. Huskies require more exercise than Pomeranians, the Pomsky is a nice mix of the two - generally needing a moderate amount of exercise. The Pomsky does well in all different climates, many love hiking and swimming with their owners. As a result of the mix of both breeds, Pomskies tend to have the best qualities from each breed. Here at Smoky Mountain Pomskies, we started breeding our female Huskies in the spring of 2015, with our first litter arriving in June 2015.

Why do people make Pomskies? The simple answer is that many people love Huskies, but do not have the space for a large dog in their homes and yards. Pomskies are very adaptive and small enough to live in an apartment building, as long as they have adequate recreation and exercise. Our goal is to make miniature Huskies, with the look of a Siberian Husky and a bit less independent, like a Pomeranian. Pomskies are highly intelligent and train very well. We have many Pomskies that are emotional support dogs, service dogs, and Autism support dogs. They have a sixth sense for knowing when their owners need them and act accordingly. Pomskies bond with their people amazingly well, adapting to the lifestyle of their owners. Whether a family with children, a college student, young professionals, or retirees, all our owners have happy dogs that have seamlessly fit into their lifestyles.

After seven years of breeding Pomskies, we have yet to find an owner who would willingly give up their dog. Pomskies will become a member of the family and their hearts will beat right alongside yours. They will love your newborn as their own, follow the two-year old around the house and yard and keep your moody teen company when they don't get along with anyone else. If you need a "ride or die”, your Pomsky will gladly step up to the plate. These dogs have a huge capacity to adapt, love, support, and learn.
