Midwoof Diaries: Snow in the South? Say it isn’t so! Also, a recipe for “Snow Cream”…

Winter weather is here. The south can be very tricky in the cold weather season. There are some days when we are in short sleeves and shorts, full sun, and 50 degrees outside. Then, later in the evening, a storm or current of winds come through and drop our temps, freeze our car windows, and show us that winter is still here. I am very invested in watching the weather because Tennessee shuts down when the roads are bad. Our country road is skinny and has a drop off ditch on each side that makes driving in the snow and ice treacherous. We’ve even gotten stuck in the past trying to get out of our driveway.

A week ago, I started watching this storm system and began preparation to make sure we had everything necessary for us, and also our dogs. Dog food, puppy food, and whelping supplies were at the top of my list. If stores close and roads are dangerous, we can’t get those supplies. We order our puppy food from Chewy.com and if we ran out and package delivery is suspended, we are up the proverbial creek without a paddle. We have a generator that was bought in case power goes out. Every year, we have a little bit of trouble starting the generator. This is another vital emergency equipment we need, not only for ourselves, but for our puppies. While the adult dogs can go a little lower in temperatures, puppies cannot hold their body temperature steady and retain safe temps. All of our dogs have electricity for heat, light, and air conditioning, but that is gone when the power is out. The generator is for peace of mind. In the years since we bought it, we have never had to use it in an emergency. We also make sure that we have adequate water for everyone, just in case. In a pinch, snow and ice can be melted for water. But we also have backup water that we store, just in case. Flashlights, batteries, extra power supplies for our phones and computers (so we don’t use the generator power), work lights so we can see, are all things in my emergency kit. Since we are also coming up on tornado season, all of these things are interchangeable for both weather seasons. I also charge up the camera battery, because photos of Pomskies in the snow are amazing!

This particular storm was unusual because it hit a lot of states in the south that never see snow. A lot of our Alabama Pomskies were in their element, experiencing and playing in the snow for the first time. One of our owners in Tennessee sent us some photos of their puppy, Sheldon, playing in the snow and experiencing “Snow Cream” for the very first time. Snow Cream is a dessert that people make from fresh snow (stay away from the yellow stuff). ;) Have you ever made Snow Cream? If not, you are missing out!

Sheldon currently has little half siblings available from Caiti and Banzai! Check them out at https://www.smokymountainpomskies.com/available-puppies

I have attached a recipe for Snow Cream below!

1/2 cup sugar

1 tsp vanilla

Toppings (Sprinkles, chocolate chips, syrup, etc)
