Midwoof Diaries: What is a Pomsky?

What is a Pomsky?

Pomskies are a hybrid dog breed resulting from the crossbreeding of a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. Experienced veteran breeders often initiated their breeding lines by artificially inseminating a female Siberian Husky with sperm from a male Pomeranian. It is highly risky and potentially life-threatening to use a female Pomeranian as the female in Pomsky breeding; such practices are extremely dangerous and strongly discouraged. At Smoky Mountain Pomskies, our breeding program began with female Siberian Huskies and male Pomeranians. As time has progressed, we have shifted to exclusively breeding the Pomsky lines that we initially established.

Why did breeders choose the Pomeranian to cross with the Husky?

The Pomeranian may be small, but it boasts a double coat similar to that of a Husky. Both breeds shed their coats semi-annually; however, with consistent grooming, shedding can be managed. While Huskies need more physical activity compared to Pomeranians, the Pomsky offers a balanced blend, typically requiring a moderate level of exercise. Pomskies adapt well to various climates and often enjoy activities like hiking and swimming alongside their owners. Due to their mixed heritage, Pomskies often inherit the best traits of both breeds. At Smoky Mountain Pomskies, we began breeding our female Huskies in spring 2015, and welcomed our inaugural litter in June of the same year.

Why do people make Pomskies?

The simple fact is that while many people adore Huskies, they often lack the space for a large dog in their homes and yards. Pomskies are adaptable and sufficiently small to thrive in an apartment setting, provided they get enough play and exercise. Our goal is to breed miniature Huskies that resemble the Siberian Husky in appearance but are slightly less independent, akin to a Pomeranian. Pomskies are exceptionally smart and respond well to training. Our Pomskies serve as family dogs, emotional support animals, service dogs, and Autism assistance dogs. They possess an innate ability to sense when their owners need them and respond appropriately. Pomskies form strong bonds with their humans, effortlessly integrating into the lifestyles of their owners, be it a family with kids, a college student, young professionals, or retirees, ensuring all our clients have content dogs that fit perfectly into their lives.

After nine years of breeding Pomskies, we've never encountered an owner who would willingly part with their pet. Pomskies become integral members of the family, syncing their hearts with yours. They will cherish your newborn as if it were their own, accompany your two-year-old throughout the home and garden, and offer solace to your moody teenager when they're at odds with the world. If you're in need of a steadfast companion, your Pomsky will eagerly fulfill that role. These dogs possess an immense ability to adapt, love, support, and learn. We take pride in being among the most esteemed, established, and enduring Pomsky breeders in the United States, dedicated to delivering our clients the most beautiful, healthiest, and best-socialized Pomskies, coupled with unparalleled customer service in this industry.
